Buck Rogers and Scarlett O'Hara

..

I just had the wonderful experience of seeing "Gone With The Wind" on the big screen at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Wilshire Blvd.

To start the night off, they showed News Clips of the Gone With the Wind premiere.
Very exciting to see a Clark Gable interview.

First, a wonderful panel discussion on Gone with the Wind and it included some of the child actors from the movie.

Then they showed the first in the Buck Rogers serial.
If you ever get a chance to see one of these, I really recommend it.
Buck Rogers' is a pilot whose plane crashes and he is frozen - until the year 2440 or thereabouts.
He then because an astronaut / pilot in the new time period.
The serials were made in the 1930s - so it is funny to see what they thought modern technology would look like.
For example, in the 1930s there was no knowledge yet of computers. So when the Scientists in 2440 have to look things up, they are still using Books.
This got major laughs from the audience.

And then the screening of the nearly 4 hour long "Gone With the Wind". Including intermission.
This is truely one of the most outstanding romantic movies ever made.
Gorgeous on the big screen.

Of course, I could go on and on about the Dysfunctional relationships in Gone with the Wind.
But I won't - its meant to be a dramatic romance and it sure is.
I'll just blame everything on Ashley - if he had married Scarlett, whom he loved - and not the other woman who was the perfect wife - well, none of this would have happened.
Ashley and Scarlett would have settled down to a crazy married life wrapped around her self-absorbed behavior, and everyone would have been happy.
Instead, everyone married people they didn't love - and its emotional torture.
Then of course there is Clark Gable as the dashing Rhett Butler - and its a major melodramatic romance.

I loved every minute of it !

Tropic Thunder

Caught Tropic Thunder today. (I am running a few weeks behind on my movies.)
Its still in The Arclight Dome , and still Number #1 at the box-office.

Very funny ! There were scenes were I just laughed and laughed.
Totally hysterical.

There are alot of "Hollywood Insider" type jokes. But if you remember that it is a
"Movie About Making a Movie" - you will totally get it.

It must have been a pretty expensive movie to make - all those helicopters !
But I would guess that Ben Stiller can pretty much get any budget he wants - his movies are so funny !

As we left the theatre, the first thing I said was:
"I wish Tom Cruise would do more Comedies !"

I think Ben Stiller is the only person who get Tom Crise to do something like this.
Watch the ending credits - they are hysterical !

Beowulf

Years and years ago, I listened to the epic poem, "Beowulf" as a book-on-tape in the car, as I was driving to work.
As I was watching the movie, Beowulf , I could tell right away that this is Not an exact recreation of the classic poem.
Personally, I wished they had stuck closer to the original story-line.

In addition, I really didn't like the cartoony effects that they added. It made the movie look to Cutesy - kind of like watching Shrek.
And its a movie with scary monsters - and a hero who rescues everyone from the horrible monsters.
I just had a hard time getting passed some of the cutesy characters.

Even though the film shows how, over the years, the people started to follow Christianity - there are still a few comments that don't fit the original religious ideas in the poem.
For example, a man asks the king, since they are in a time of crisis with Grendel the monster terrorizing them, "Do you want to order the people to pray to the God the Romans worship, the Jesus God - as well as our gods?"
And the King replies "No. At a time like this the god's won't help us. We need a hero."
And then Beowulf shows up right in the nick of time.

Read the Wikipedia Discription of Beowulf.
I quote Wikipedia "That the scribes of Cotton Vitellius A.XV were Christian is beyond doubt; and it is equally certain that Beowulf was composed in a Christianized England, since conversion took place in the sixth and seventh centuries...Scholars disagree as to whether Beowulf's main thematic thrust is pagan or Christian in nature...Beowulf’s own beliefs are not expressed explicitly. He offers eloquent prayers to a higher power, addressing himself to the “Father Almighty” or the “Wielder of All.”

In the film, after Beowulf is older, you see people carrying crosses and Crucifixes, and some people have a cross on their clothing.
So the film does depict that there was a change in religious belief during Beowulf's life.

I just wish they had done the entire movie according to the original poem. Its one of the oldest writings that we have in existence. Dating back to around the 8th century.
The original story has survived the test of time. I would have liked to see that as a movie.

The Mist

Just saw an advanced screening of "The Mist" .
I do like scary monster movies. And I do like Stephen King novels.

"The Mist" was scary. And gruesome in spots.
A government experiment goes wrong - and we get invaded by horrible creatures from another dimension. These creatures hide in The Mist.
The story has a very timely message about messing with our environment and how it could cause us horrible problems.

Marcia Gay Harden plays a psycho religious woman. And it was very unfortunate that a good monster movie like this, had to go in that direction with religion.
I think that might be how Stephen King wrote it - I don't know, I haven't read the Novella .
In the beginning its obvious that Marcia Gary Harden's character is alittle wacky, but she has a scene where she is praying for her fellow survivors - so I thought "okay, she's wacky but sincere, this won't be that bad".
Then she starts to go really wacky - and I was getting alittle offended.
And in the end, people in the group of survivors start to blindly follow her, because they think she is a Mystic and talks directly to God.
It ended up being a demonstration of what people will do in a Crisis, and the "Mob Mentality" that sets in. And how people will follow anyone who offers them hope, even if that person is obviously preaching a belief that is wrong.

There is a scene in the movie, when some of the survivors are heading out into the Mist to try to get help. And one of the men turns to Marcia Gay Harden, and says something like "You know I believe in God too, but my God is alot nicer than yours."

Back to the Scary monsters. Yes, lots and lots of scary monsters.
Great special effects with the scary monsters.
I jumped a few times in terror. I was worried was going to have trouble getting to sleep that night. So great scary movie.

But this is not a happy movie. It was really sad and depressing. The ending is very tragic.
So just be warned - even if you like scary gruesome movies, this one is a real downer.

Arclight Sherman Oaks

I haven't driven out to Sherman Oaks in, oh, maybe 15 years....
But the Arclight Cinemas is having their "soft" opening there this month.
And they invited the Members out to private party last night. (See it is worth it to sign up for that free little blue card.)

Down Ventura Blvd I went to the Sherman Oaks Galleria.
I expected to see a big sign saying "Arclight Cinemas", like there is in Hollywood.
But Nope - so I passed it, and had to turn back around.

Once parked, a nice security noticed my confused look as I read the "You Are Here" map.
When I told him I was heading to the Arclight, he laughed and said "Oh you are one of those Special People - you get to go there first !"
Sounds like the Mall employees are even dying to get into the new theatre.

He pointed me through the Mall.
The escalator that goes to Arclight is right smack in between The Cheesecake Factory and El Torito Grill .

And those Arclight people really know how to throw a party.
Complementary everything - Bar, cheese table - waiters walking around with appetizers like Duck Potstickers.
Many guests didn't bother with the fancy food and drinks, and went right for the free concessions.
Lots of people walking around the lobby with Carmel Popcorn.
I stuck to Chardonnay and fancy hors d'oeuvres.

Nice employees from the Arclight main office were there with name badges to chat with us about our "Arclight experience". From what I heard, the square footage in Sherman Oaks is smaller. But they have more seats - resulting in a smaller lobby, and the front row being closer to the screen.
There will be a similar restaurant like the one in Hollywood, along with a Coffee Bar.
And the movies will vary alittle between Hollywood and Sherman Oaks, because Sherman Oaks has a higher "family demographic".
And from what I heard, they hope to have Four more Arclights in the works, but no locations have been confirmed.

I told the nice Arclight person, how spoiled we are these days. Most people I know do not want to sit in a theatre that does not have stadium seating.
In Los Angeles the theatres have become so fancy, that we just can't deal with noise or a big head in front of us blocking the screen.

I headed over to get my complementary concessions - soda and regular popcorn. And headed to the theatre.
One guy, arms filled with popcorns and sodas and candy, couldn't make it up the stairs.
The usher had to help him, and he said "Sorry, I am really inebriated."
The lady next to me muttered "Thats classy".
Some people just can't stop when its free booze.

Our movie for the night was "American Gangster".
Starring Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe .
If you want a drug story with alittle bit of a Moral to it, I guess this would be it.
It is based on a true story.

All in all, it was a really fun night. And a really fun party.
Well, usually anything that includes a free movie is fun.

I will be driving back to Sherman Oaks to check it out again. Once they have finished the final touches, and the Arclight restaurant is opened. The Grand Opening is the middle of December.
There is an afternoon of shopping at The Sherman Oaks Galleria, following by a Carmel Corn and film, in my very near future.

Vine Theatre Hollywood

I had missed both "Live Free or Die Hard" and "Oceans 13" when they were in the theatres.
Then one day as I was driving down Hollywood Blvd, I saw that they were both playing as a double feature at The Vine Theatre.

The Vine Theatre is an old movie theatre that shows movies past their run, as double-features for only $7...
Its old, alittle run down. But they seem to keep it pretty clean inside.
And I liked the popcorn, because it was plain with an undetectable amount of salt.
When I attended yesterday, I saw the 5pm show of Live Free or Die Hard and the 7:30 show of Oceans 13.
There were mainly couples there, a few singles - less than 20 people in this huge old theatre.

Movie Recommendation - Death At A Funeral

Death AT A Funeral
I saw the movie Death At A Funeral over at Arclight Cinemas .

This is an English Comedy about a family who all come together for a Funeral. It starts out with the wrong body getting delivered for the funeral - and then things just get worse - and funnier - from that point on.

I laughed so hard I had tears running down my eyes. I had to tell my friend "Before we go to dinner, I have to fix my make-up, I was laughing to hard."

Also, the two lead actors, Matthew Macfadyen and Rupert Graves are both very handsome.

This movie is going in my "Top 10" all time favorites list.

Talk to Me

Drove over to the Arclight Cinemas, bought our tickets.
Then walked across Sunset Blvd to Kabuki's restaurant .
As we are crossing the street, four people are walking towards us.
I recognized the tall redhead with the wild make-up, and I grab one of my friends my the arm.
My friend exclaims "That's Shirley Manson of Garbage !"

Kabuki's restaurant - I was starving, I bought the largest combo plate they had. Everything was on it.
Chicken Teriyaki, Beef ribs and Shrimp and Veggie Tempera.
Enough for three meals, I had to put the rest in my car and take it home for lunch tomorrow.

We saw "Talk To Me" starring Don Cheadle. I really liked it. I think it is one of my favorite movies of the summer. A historical story, with drama, comedy and music. Really an entertaining and educational film.

NameI saw the movie Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer.
It was over at Arclight Dome Theatre in Hollywood .
I love the Dome, if you are coming to visit Hollywood, I highly recommend seeing a movie in the Dome.
Its beautiful inside, and the screen is huge.
Its the perfect screen for a summer blockbuster like "Fantastic Four".

Dinner - and You Kill Me

Name

After work, it was out for dinner.
House of Pies in Los Feliz - Cod, a baked potato, and steamed veggies.

The over to the Arclight, to see "You Kill Me" starring Starring Ben Kingsley and Starring Tea Leoni and Luke Wilson .

Its a dark comedy about a Mob Hit-man, who has to start going to Alcoholic Anonymous Meetings.
I thought it was very funny for a dark comedy. Tea Leoni is great as the brooding romantic interest of Ben Kingsley.

I hope people get a chance to see this, and that all the Hollywood Summer Blockbusters don't knock it out of the movie theatres to quickly.

Sunday Lessons and Movies

Church this morning was at Hollywood Presbyterian Church .
And after that it was a quick trip to Whole Foods on Beverly.
I made a huge salad from their salad bar... and brought it home while I updated my Zazzle page .

Then I volunteered again tonight at Egyptian Theatre , for Crispin Glover's movie "What Is It?".
I was ticket taker, and then I got to go in and see the movie.

One of the more interesting questions I was asked tonight as ticket taker was "Do you think we will be offended by this movie?"
I guess the woman who asked me that works with Disabled people and thats why she wanted to see it. But it an experimental movie, and its not to some people's tastes.
I tried to explain that the reason some people find it interesting is that there are Disabled people who are cast in roles that are not necessarily written for Disabled people... and that is explained more in the Question and Answer that is given at the end.

If someone asks that question - Will They Be Offended - its difficult to answer.
Because first, I think if you are going to a movie and you think that the movie might be offensive itself, its best to research it more on the internet before you go. And second, if you are the type of person who is picky about what they see so you have to ask that question- well, its probably best not to see it. Go see something else instead.

As for me - do I get offended ? Yes, alot of things offend me.
But I have developed a Method.
Most scenes in movies are over with in a few minutes. And then its on to the next scene.
That is any movie you see these days - in any movie theatre. Big Hollywood Blockbusters, as well as small independent films.
So I have learned to close my eyes. Listen to the dialog. Then open my eyes again when that scene is over.
If its to bloody or gory or sexual for my taste - just close my eyes.
And when I open them again, its a whole new scene.

All in all, I liked the movie "What Is It?".
And if you knew me personally, you might be surprised by that - especially if you noticed the first paragraph in the above blog entry notes I started off the day at church this morning.
But, I think there are many underlying messages, and if you are okay with Experimental Films I think you could find this a very interesting movie - if you look for messages underneath the plot.

As for closing my eyes - there were a few scenes to sexual for my taste, and so I closed my eyes.
And I absolutely do not like needles - so any scenes with injections - well, I had to close my eyes or I'll just pass right out.

The Q&A with Crispin Glover after the movie... almost everyone who saw the movie stayed for the Q&A.
It was almost like attending a Master Class in Independent film making. I got the impression many of the people in the audience wanted to be doing what he is doing - making their own type of movie, with their own creative expression, and independently distributing it themselves.
There was alot of learning and teaching going on.

I think Crispin Glover gave one of the Best Q&A sessions I have ever heard at The Egyptian.

I desperately wanted to stay and volunteer for the Book Signing that was going on in the lobby afterwards.
But the Q&A was going on forever, and it was close to midnight.
So I had to tell the theatre manager I could not stay - tomorrow is a work day.
And I had to take off.

Here's a link to the official Crispin Glover Website.

Saturday in Hollywood

Headed over to the Mann 6 Theatres in the Hollywood and Highland , to see "Knocked Up".

What is the deal with the tourists, who can't obey the traffic laws ?
And why aren't there more traffic cops making the tourists obey the laws?
I don't really ever cuss out strangers, but I did today.
I am going north on Orange, with the green light to turn left on to Hollywood Blvd.
In the middle of my green light - three German men start to cross Orange right in front of my car.
I slam on the breaks, and yell "I have the green light you Morons!" followed by a long string of cuss words out of my mouth.
I had really truly almost hit them.
They yell back at me in German - and I can tell they are drunk.
Its not even Two o'clock in the afternoon yet.
After I drive away, they continue crossing against their Red Light.

Next I head down the steep ramp on Orange into the Hollywood and Highland Complex.
Its really sunny and bright out - and as you go down the ramp, the parking structure is a dark shadow.
For a few seconds you are blinded because you are in bright light - looking down into a dark shadow.
My car makes it into the dark shadow - and then I see Tourist walking Up the steep ramp !
Right straight into my car !
They are walking up the side that the cars go down.
Again, I slam on my breaks, and more cussing out of my mouth.
They just look at me.

As I get my ticket from the machine - I yell over to the guys in the booths cashing people out of the parking structure "You have people walking UP THE RAMP!"
They just ignore me, like I am some crazy woman.
I drive through the structure and I see an parking employee:
"You know there are people walking up the ramp. They are going to get hit. You should have someone placed at the ramp, to make sure people don't go up it."
He shrugs at me "I'm down here - I don't see whats going on up there."
I reply "Well, can you at least tell your Supervisor that someone complained about people walking up the ramp?"
"Oh, yeah, uh-huh, I can do that", he said.

Never mind, its Summer - there are tourists all over the place.
And Hollywood doesn't seem to be doing anything to control the pedestrian traffic.
I am surprised more people don't get hit by cars.

After I get my movie ticket, I run to the concession stand.
And there is not a single employee anywhere.
Not an employee in sight.

Two other people are also standing at the concession standing looking lost and forlorn.

I finally yell across the lobby
"Is there a Concession Stand person?"
The manager finds someone - and now I am super-late for the movie.
So late for the movie, I sit in the very last seat in the very last row by the door.

I liked "Knocked Up" , it was funny.
And Katherine Heigl is great in it.
The story-line was uplifting. And even though alot of the humor is very raunchy, it had a very real pro-life lesson, about making the right decisions - and emotionally growing through making these strong decisions. And.. plus, lots of raunchy humor.

After the movie, I grab a chicken wrap sandwich from the corner restaurant,
and I head over to the Egyptian Theatre .
I am volunteering tonight, for Crispin Glover's movie "What Is It?".
I am Captain, which means I have to hang-out in the lobby all night and watch the front door.

The theatre was very full, as it was the night before. And the movie "What Is It?", is experimental and draws a very Artsy Hip crowd.
So hanging out in the lobby is fun, because I get to people watch.

After the movie, Crispin Glover had a table set-up. He is selling his books, and doing autographs.
Many of his fans came with a digital camera - and I ended up helping out by taking photographs during the evening.

It was getting way passed midnight, and I just can't stay up that late - not even on a weekend.
One of the other volunteers took over for me, as I headed home.

Here's a link to the official Crispin Glover Website.

Mr. Brooks

After the morning in Brentwood, we headed on over to the new Landmark Theatres
on Pico Blvd in West LA.
The place is still under-construction, but the general idea is very similar to The Archlight in Hollywood.
The theatres have great seating inside. Its assigned seating. Great concession stand. And there is a bar right next to the theatre. Soon there will be a restaurant and bookstore.

The concession stand may have fancy items - but my Pom Tea was $4.50 ... that for one bottle during the movie. Fancy food, but concession stand prices.

Mr Brooks
I saw the movie Mr. Brooks
Starring Kevin Costner .

This is the scariest movie I have seen in a while. Costner plays a wealthy business man, who is a serial killer at night. There were two places in the movie where I almost jumped out of my seat.
And I bet Kevin Costner gets nominated for an Oscar for this one - he was great.

The Grove

After early afternoon of dealing with my Car... I headed over to The Grove .

First I headed over towards the Farmers Market .
Stopped for lunch at Johnny Rockets .
I ordered a burger, with mushrooms and swiss cheese. And it was terrible. It was the greasiest burger I have ever had. The grease was dripping of my burger as I ate it.

I thought about returning it.... but I was trying to make the movie showtime.

So I head on over to the Pacific Movie Theatres ,
to see Pirates of The Caribbean .
I really wanted to see this movie... but I was waiting until all the crowds died down to go.

And just as the movie started ... my stomach started to do weird things.
It was all the grease from the burger.
I usually don't eat fatty things like that.
Oh, no... I worried I was going to get sick during a 3 hour movie.
I made it through the movie ... but the entire bag of popcorn I bought, sat on the floor. I couldn't touch it after that hamburger.

I loved Pirates of The Caribbean .
I just wish there would have been more scenes with Johnny Depp.
But my favorite scene of all is when Bill Nighy transforms back into what he was before he had all those tentacles all over the place.

Sunday in Hollywood

First, I overslept really late ... and was rushing to get out the door.
I wanted to grab dinner at a restaurant, but I didn't have time.
So once at Hollywood and Hollywood ,
I ran into the new Quiznos .

The guy behind the counter looks at me and says :
"First, before you order - we are out of ......"
and he lists about 20 different things like "all of our salads" and "roast beef",

I stood there saying "Okay, what DO you have?"
And I ended up with some beefy cheese sandwich ...I think it had mushrooms in it too.

Then ran down Hollywood Blvd, to make it in time for my volunteer shift at the
Egyptian Theatre .
There was a performance of Brand Upon The Brain by Guy Maddin.

Shrek the Third

Lunch was at House of Pies in Los Feliz.

Then over At The Arclight Dome
to see Shrek the Third ....
One thing no one ever seems to mention about the Shrek Movies ... they all seem to have great movie soundtracks .
I loved the songs during this movie !

Also some great casting for the Fairy Tale Princesses, Maya Rudolph was Rapunzel , Amy Sedaris was Cinderella , Amy Poehler was Snow White, and Cheri Otari was Sleeping Beauty.
Such fun !

LACMA

Los Angeles County Museum of Art ..

Being the internet-geek that I am, I spent most of the day wasting time on the computer. But I really wanted to catch the "Modern West" and "Re-Site-ing The West" Exhibits at LACMA....

I manage to make it to the Museum, alittle bit after 5 pm.
I'm thinking - well, they close at 8pm, so thats plenty of time.

I am dashing up the stairs, to the ticket booth - and who do I see coming out of the museum ?
Rob Schneider
Yeah, Deuce Bigalow himself.
As a friend later said.... an Art Museum and Rob Schneider just don't seem to go together.
So I double-backed to take a second look and make sure it was him.

It was - and he was with a blond woman.
And he saw me recognizing him - and I was kind of starring at him.
And he kind of smiled at me....

But I was polite and went on my way... but I felt like running up to him jumping up and down and yelling "I'm probably the only Female in the United States who really LIKES your movies!"
But I did not become a Rabid Fan. I continued on my way back to the ticket booth.

I go up to the ticket booth, and I say to the guy "Its after 5pm - do you have a reduced rate?"
And he says "Yes we do - Its Free"

I'm very confused. I just saw a famous comedian in the courtyard, and now they tell me the Museum is Free after 5 pm on Saturdays.

He hands me my "FREE after 5pm" ticket - and I continue on my way - Of course, keeping an eye out for any famous comedians who might be at the museum that day.
I never see Rob Schneider again, so I don't get to turn into an hysterical fan.

After a burger in the cafeteria, I spend alot of time in both the "Modern West" exhibit, and the "Re-SITE-ing The West" exhibit. It was wonderful. Beautiful California landscapes, paintings and photos.

But the "Dan Flavin: A Retrospective" was just not for me. Walking into a room filled with green neon lights that burn my eyeballs out of their sockets, is just not my cup of tea.
I look at few of the fancy neon lights - I look at some of the permanent collection instead.

Whats the perfect way to end a day at an art museum?
A horror movie.
I drive to Hollywood and Highland .....
to see "28 Weeks Later" .
I never saw "28 Days"... but since "28 Weeks" was on the Top 10 List for a while - I wanted to see it.
I also like Robert Carlyle as an actor too...

Gee... The Art Museum, A Famous Comedian and A Horror Movie - all in one day.

Diary of A Mad HouseWife

Diary of A Mad Housewife
At the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
I saw Diary of A Mad Housewife from 1970.

If you want to see an excellent movie from the 1970s - this is the one to see.
And... Frank Langella was absolutely gorgeous in his younger days...
Carrie Snodgress and Richard Benjamin are great in this too.

The plot is that a bored housewife has an affair with a writer.
To me it was like looking into a time machine, at many of the social and marital issues that happened in the 70s.
A great glimpse into that time period..

Looking For Mr Goodbar

Went to a screening of Looking for Mr. Goodbar from 1977.
over at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

This is a movie with some really serious subject matter. And I wanted to see if for
Diane Keaton's performance.
Its hard to believe that Diane Keaton won the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Actress, but she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar.
It was probably due to the subject matter.
She won for Annie Hall instead.

There is some interesting information on the movie at Wikipedia.
The book and movie are based on the true story about Roseann Quinn .

There is alot of talk on the internet as to exactly what the name "Goodbar" in the title refers to.
One other thing in the movie perplexed me as well.
Was it common for people to bring books to bars, and sit and read ?
I know now we have Starbucks, and people go to coffee shops to read.
A Bar seems like a strange place to read a book - its dark and noisy.
Maybe it was just a thing that the character did to get attention.
Or maybe people really did that in the 70s...

Spiderman-3

12:01 midnight ... okay, thats kind of confusing...
12:01 midnight of Thursday May 3... is actually the same as 12:01 in the morning of Friday May 4.
The tickets and the show-time listings on the internet were actually alittle confusing.

First, I met my friends (2 other women, and 1 guy) at The Bowery on
Sunset Blvd for the latest dinner I have ever had in my entire life.
My system was so off, that I ordered something I don't ever eat, I don't like, and its totally unhealthy because its a scavenger ... Beer Battered Shrimp.
I took a few bites, and I couldn't finish it...
I am sure it was good. It was just that my stomach did not know what it wanted at 11:00 pm at night.

My friends and I all had our tickets, and The Arclight Cinema is assigned seating.
And we all got our seats together.

While my friends were off doing something else, I got into the Concession stand line.
I was the only single woman in the concession stand line.
It was pretty much 90% men, and they were all looking at me.
It was way to funny.
Who would have thought the concession stand line at the first screening for Spiderman would be a good pick-up joint?

Nevertheless, I was in a rush to get my food and get back to my seats.
When I got back to my seat, I told my friends what the concession stand was like.
And one friend - she is much younger than me - said "Yeah, it is a Sausage-fest in here".
Okay - thats the first time I ever heard that term.

Just before Spiderman-3 started, a young guy - who looked like an Arclight employee except her was wearing a Cap on his head - walked up to the microphone.
He started to read from a piece of paper: "Thank you for choosing Arclight Cinemas, We hope you enjoy this screening of Spiderman-3 ... please remember to turn off all cell-phone and pagers..."

Half-way through the introduction speech, the audience realized that the person doing the reading was none other than Tobey Maguire ....
And everyone started to cheer !

Tobey Maquire stood off to the side with about 20 other people - and they stayed for about the first 30 minutes of Spider-man 3.

My friends and I had a great time. But I was so caught up in the actually event of the 12:01 screening, that I am probably going to have to go see Spiderman-3 a second time....

Here are some Spiderman-3 pictures, taken around the Arclight Cinema:

Fracture and The Hoax

Saw two late movies tonight.
"Fracture" starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling .
Anthony Hopkins is so perfect at being scary !
And I was so looking forward to seeing Ryan Gosling again after his Oscar Nomination.
It was a great suspenseful movie.

Then...
"The Hoax" starring Richard Gere .
With Alfred Molina , who is one of favorite actors. Hope Davis, Marcia Gay Harden and Stanley Tucci are also in it.
So it is an outstanding cast.
This is based on a true story. So I found it a very interesting piece of modern history.

Film Noir - He Walked By Night

The Film Noir Series is over at the Egyptian Theatre .

I saw "He Walked By Night" from 1948.
There were some great shots from old Los Angeles in the movie.

The movie starred Richard Basehart , and Jack Webb.

If you are a fan of the TV series "Dragnet" which starred Jack Webb, check this movie out.
It is the movie that was the inspiration for Dragnet.

Easter Movies

I have been over at The Arclight Theatres so often, and every time I use their blue card.
So I have been racking up the points.
I think I have enough points on the card for three free movies.
So I used my "Two for one", and saw a double feature today.

Blades of Glory in the Dome
immediately followed by The Last Mimzy ... which was my free ticket

"Blades of Glory" was hysterical. Both Will Ferrell and Jon Heder are perfect together.
The minute they perform together, the movie is so funny.

The Last Mimsy is an interesting movie that mixes a Childrens Story, with futurist sci-fi and New Age ideas.

So for movies to watch on Easter, these were both were perfect comedies for the afternoon.

A Day In Hollywood

I signed up for an early morning volunteer shift at Egyptian Theatre .
They don't usually have things where I need to be there at 9:30 am. But today was an all day event, sponsored by The Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles and The Japan Foundation of Los Angeles .
Two Anime movies, Aachi & Ssipak from Korea, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time from Japan

Of course, I was running late. It is Saturday after all.
So instead of parking in the Hollywood and Highland lot, where they will validate - I grab a spot on the street and start to feed the meter.
I am standing there, digging through my purse trying to find that Quarter that is stuck at the very bottom.
When a group of four nice gentlemen go passed by me.....
And one of them puts a Quarter in the parking meter.
"You don't want to get a ticket. They are really strict around here, I know how it is" he says.

"Oh, yeah, okay - thanks." I say stunned and almost speechless at what just happened.
As they continue on their way.

By the time I run/walk to the Egyptian, they are an entire half block away.
I thought they were going to the Anime event - I mean why else would a group of four guys be in Hollywood at this time of the morning ?
But by the time I realize they are walking passed the Egyptian, it is to late for me to run after them to say anything, and I really wanted to invite them to the free animation screening.

As I am volunteering, a theatre patron asks another volunteer about where to eat in the area.
The volunteer tells him about the great places to eat over at Hollywood and Highland . I hear them mentioning "California Pizza Kitchen" and Beard Papa's Creme Puffs.
They are talking about how delicious the creme puffs are....

Soon the Anime movies are starting. But now I have to move my car.
The meters on the street are only for one hour. And I will be in Hollywood all day.
So I go drive me car into the Hollywood and Highland complex.
I can get validated - 4 hours for $2 - but it really won't matter, because I will be there all day.

Walking back up through the mall, to make it back to Hollywood Blvd and the Egyptian, I walk right passed Beard Papa's Creme Puffs.
How long has it been since I have had a Creme Puff ?
Oh, around Twenty Years.
Thats it. I am having a Creme Puff.

I walk into the store, and yes they sell Creme Puffs. There is a few flavors to choose from.
And a few other desserts. I am wondering "How can a store survive only selling Creme Puffs?"
I order one with chocolate filling, and a cup of coffee.
And it is sooooo delicious.
Then its back to finishing my shift at the Egyptian.

Later on in the afternoon, I meet up with friends.
I have been getting opinions on the movie ""300" , trying to figure out if a women in her 40s, like me, could possibly enjoy an ancient Greek war move.

I have asked two other friends. One said Yes, it was Fabulous.
The other said No, it was to violent and she hated it.
So I decide to ask one more female for one more opinion.
"Oh, it is fantastic ! You have to see it !" she says.
"Well, I heard it wasn't that good" I said "Oh, no... its great... there are really fit buff men who wear nothing but leather diapers through-out the entire movie. Its fantastic, you have to see it !"

Well, thats a good enough review for me. I'm there.

I walk over to the Mann's Theatres at Hollywood and Highland.
I was hoping to see it in the Chinese, but the timing doesn't work out right.
I will have to see it in the Mann 6.
I ask the ticket seller how big the theatre is. It only has 150 seats.
He notices the look on my face "But we've only sold 8 tickets, you can sit anywhere."
I buy a ticket, alittle unhappy about the situation.
This is the kind of movie you really want to see on a huge screen.

In line to get my concessions. I am trying to ignore the family in front of me.
The mother and father look like they just walked out of a Bar, are alittle tipsy, and its only early afternoon.
The mother has bleach blond hair, and she is wearing black leggings - not a good choice for someone in her age range.
The poor little boy just wants some candy.
"No, you aren't getting any sugar. Thats all you eat is sugar", says the mother.
She orders a couple of Combos. Popcorn, Soda, Candy.
The Concession Guy asks her "What size combo do you want?"
"I don't care" is her reply.
She and her husband are completely confused at the concession stand choices.

I move to a different line and get my concessions and go into the theatre.
I sit in the very last row of the 150 seat Mann 6, hoping to get a good view.
It was okay from the last row.

"300" is a movie that both men and women will like. There is definitely alot of war in it - because thats what its about.
And blood, and heads getting chopped off. But its all in Slo-Mo, so it doesn't seem the realistic.
During the movie, I only had to shut my eyes once.

And yes, as my friend said, lots of really hot dudes in leather diapers in the movie - "300" of them in fact.

I did enjoy the relationship between the King and his wife .
I wonder if thats really how they treated their women back then.
Oh, and there is one really steamy love-scene that is worth the price of your admission ticket.

And.... its also a history lesson, because these events really did happen.

After that, I am ready for dinner - so I stop at "California Pizza Kitchen".
And I have the healthy Chopped Salad, with no salami, but with chicken.
Next to me is a table of Working Actors, who are discussing acting teachers, casting websites and similar.
It was interesting eavesdropping on them. One of the actors was saying how studying at one of the Improv schools, like Second city, or the Groundlings, was considered very impressive by most casting directors. They give it even more consideration
than if you studied theatre arts at a four year college.
I don't know if thats true - but that what he said.

After arriving in Hollywood at 9:30 am, it is finally time to go home - and its 8pm already.
The parking validation didn't help - I was there all day, and I have to still pay ten bucks to get out the lot.

How Green Was My Valley

Volunteering today at the Egyptian Theatre .

How Green Was My Valley
The movie was "How Green Was My Valley" from 1941. Directed by John Ford .
And with a very young Roddy McDowall.

This movie won 5 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Donald Crisp, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography.

Its the story of a Welsh coal-mining family who deal with faith, money and job security as they face the industrialization of the industry that they work in.

Check out the movie quotes page on IMDB.com .
There are some amazing lines in this movie. For instance:
"But remember, with strength goes responsibility - to others and to yourselves. For you cannot conquer injustice with more injustice - only with justice and the help of God."

There is a scene that is not in the quotes on IMDB, that really stood out to me. It is when Hew first becomes unable to walk, and Mr. Gruffydd goes to his bedside and tells him to have faith that God will heal him, and that he has to believe. Its a moving and touching scene.

I highly recommend you rent this movie. Its a great classic movie, with great moral lessons.
I think its one of the best movies ever made.

Its from the novel by Richard Llewellyn. When I got home, I got online to the Los Angeles Public Library , and I requested a few books by Richard Llewellyn.
I can't wait to read them.

Premier The Lookout

AT the Egyptian Theatre , it was the premier of "The Lookout" starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (remember him from "3rd Rock From the Sun"), and Isla Fisher (she was the crazy one in "Wedding Crashers" ). Along with Jeff Daniels as the blind roommate.

A very suspenseful movie about a man with brain damage, who gets coerced into helping with a bank robbery. The scenes with the bank robbery had me on the edge of my seat.
The acting is excellent.

After the movie, there were wonderful appetizers, sushi, and little sandwiches in the Egyptian Courtyard.

I walked around, and saw Sasha Baron Cohen, who is engaged to Isla Fisher.
I said to one of my friends "He's not as tall as I expected."
Yes, he's tall... but he still looks taller in the movies.

Isla looked adorable, in a cute polka dot dress.

My friends and I hit the dessert table and enjoyed the delicious chocolate macaroon balls.

Wild Hogs

Over at The Grove to catch an early afternoon matinee.
I really wanted to see "Wild Hogs".

A moving starring men over the age of 40 ? I am sooooo there !
Such a good cast, John Travolta, William H. Macy, Tim Allen , Martin Lawrence , Ray Liotta and Marisa Tomei and Jill Hennessy .

It was such a funny movie. From the beginning to the end.
And then make sure you stay for the closing credits because those are hysterical too.

Also in the movie is John C. McGinley , from the TV show "Scrubs" . He is so funny as the local cop. And Peter Fonda makes a surprise visit. He seems to be in all the motorcycle movies lately, He was in Ghostrider too.

Oh, okay... my favorite scene: the four guys - Travolta, Macy, Allen, and Lawrence - are skinny-dipping in a pond. Macy's character takes off his shorts, and you see his rear end - or maybe it was a "butt" double.
He jumps into the pond with the rest of the guys.
They are in the water up to their waist. A really funny cop, played by McGinley, comes along and wants to get in the water with them, although he is looking for much more in the way of action.
The four guys have to get away from him, without offending him since he is the local cop.
Its such a funny scene.

And why doesn't Ray Liotta do more comedy ? In "Wild Hogs" he is the bad guy. I loved him in this. Whatever you do, don't miss the funny closing credits. Because Liotta will really make you laugh during the credits.

My only complaint - the younger actresses.
William H Macy was born in 1950. His love interest, Marisa Tomei born in 1964.
Tim Allen was born 1953. Jill Hennessy plays his wife, and she was born in 1968.
I think would have been better to see these roles played by women who were not 14 to 15 years younger that the male actors. Though granted, with Hollywood age-ism, both Tomei and Hennessy are older than what would normally be cast in a movie like this.
It just that if the movie studio felt that actors in the 50-ish age group can carry a big hit movie - then I wish they would have done the same with the actresses. Even though both Tomei and Hennessy are great in their roles.

After the movie is over, we head over to Dupars . For their delicious Chicken Pot Pie.
And I call a female friend on the phone.
"Guess what movie I just saw?" I ask.
"What?"
"Wild Hogs" I reply.
"No you didn't" she said.
"Yes, and it is so funny! You have to see it!" I said.
"No, I don't" she said
"Yes, yes .... John Travolta, William H Macy, Tim Allen - they are all naked in a pond!" I explain.
"Oh..no...they aren't", she replied shocked.
"Yes, yes they are. You have to see it !" I say.
"Nooooooo" says my friend.
"Well, at least request it from Netflix when its available. Because it is really is hysterical."

GhostRider

So yesterday, I saw "Amazing Grace" - a Period Drama about the Political and Religious Leader William Wilberforce .....Today,something completely different.

First, I drove out to The Grove on Fairfax.
I saw "Ghostrider".
Action Adventure pictures are actually really fun for me.
"Ghostrider" had alot of Really Cool Special Effects.

And I like Nicolas Cage .
I met him once about 4 years ago, at an Egyptian Theatre weekend featuring his movies. And I stuffed the Gift Bags when he won the American Cinematheque Awards in the year 2001.
So he's a good guy. And I think he's a really great actor.

Wes Bentley is in "Ghostrider" playing "Blackheart", the son of the Devil. And he really stood-out in the role.
I wasn't familiar when any of his other work, so when I got home I looked him up on the internet.

I just loved - I mean, LOVED - Sam Elliott in this role as The Caretaker. He was so believable and brilliant.
Someone tell me if that was his real hair. He grew it long.
And thats the first time I have seen long grey hair look really sexy on an older man.

I am not familiar with the Marvel Comic Character . So it was alittle difficult for me to follow in the respect. In the movie, the characters do make references as to why they do certain things - so that helps you follow along.

Oh, and did I mention the Really Cool Special Effects ....

Here's a funny thing ... after I was done seeing "Ghostrider" - I drove out to
Bel Air Presbyterian Church
for their evening service.
Not because I felt I needed to go to church after seeing a movie about Demons taking over the world - but I had planned things that way just because the evening service was convenient to my schedule.

Amazing Grace

Over at the Arclight this evening.
I wasn't really sure what I wanted to see. I just arrived in the lobby, and stood there looking at the marque.
I decided on seeing "Amazing Grace" .
I am so glad I picked that movie !!!
Very inspirational and moving - and it made me want to go out and save the world.

Just one warning - it is an English Period Drama taking place in the 18th century - you know, the types where the male characters are wearing white wigs and the female characters are in long poofy dresses. So if those kinds of movies are boring to you, then grab a big cup of coffee before you go, but I recommend that you still check it out.

William Wilberforce leads the fight to end slavery in 18th century England. The movie shows how he basically had to teach English society as to why it was wrong to capture and ship slaves to England. The movie also shows the physical pain he was in while he lead this fight. He suffered from the stomach ailment colitis . And the only thing to treat it back then was Laudanum , which is made from opium.
He was also the founder of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, though the film only briefly touches on this.
William Wilberforce is a man who did alot of great things in his day.

Its a wonderful movie, the acting was outstanding. And the costumes and 18th century period setting was perfect.
I highly suggest that you go see this movie, to learn about an important piece of history, and to learn about William Wilberforce.

After the movie, I decide to look up William Wilberforce on the internet.
I ordered the book, 365 Days With Wilberforce from Amazon.com. This is a daily devotional book, of Wilberforce's writings.
It arrived just a few days after I ordered it, and I find his writings very inspiring.

Then I went to the the Los Angeles Public Library website, and placed "holds" on the following books:
Real Christianity
William Wilberforce, God's Politician
Amazing Grace in the Life of William Wilberforce

Amazon.com has many more books about and by, William Wilberforce.

Here are a few other links about the man and the movie:

and

Little Children

I was rushing to make it to the Laemmle Sunset 5 for a screening of Little Children .
I made it, but realized I had no cash.

So in the 8000 Sunset complex, I try to use the ATM.
And it won't accept my card. It just keeps spitting it back out.

So I run across Sunset, to the gas station and Mini-mart across the street.
It crosses my mind that if the card is somehow damaged, that I don't have enough cash on me to get out of the parking structure.

But my ATM card does indeed work at the Mini-Mart ATM, and I press "okay" when the machine says it will charge me an arm and a leg in order to withdraw my own money.

Finally, I make it to the Laemmle's sunset 5 to see Little Children.
Its a very dramatic movie. I wanted to see it because of the outstanding acting performances.
And yes, all the acting is really incredible.

Little Children is very dramatic and serious. Its not just a story about a child molester - that is only part of the story.
Its a story of how grown adults can act like little children in their own ways. And how their childish decisions effect their lives.

Jackie Earle Haley is outstanding in this as the local child molester, he certainly did deserve the Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nomination.
Its great to see how after being a child actor in the Bad News Bears movies of 70's, that he's continued on with his acting career in adult life.
He is very talented, and I think we will be seeing him in alot more award-winning roles in the future.
Check out the IMDB.com page on Jackie Earle Haley .
His website is JEH Productions , where you can see videos of some of his work as a Director for Television commercials.

Here is also a link for the Little Children Movie website.
and the DVD is available on Amazon.com

The Oscars
Volunteered at the Egyptian Theatre , for their big Oscar Party.
They served lots of delicious food starting in the afternoon.
Then once the Oscars started, we all watched them on the big screen.
It was alot of fun, with a large turn-out of people.
There were prizes given for the most correct guesses.

And... everyone got a Gift Bag that included the sound track from The Queen ,
and a DVD of United 93 .
And I also got a large Dreamgirls poster.

I love watching the Oscars on a large movie theatre screen, in a theatre filled with people. I don't know if I will ever be able to watch them on the little TV screen again.
This event was so much fun.

Oscar Shorts

Volunteered at the Egyptian Theatre .
Tonight, they showed the 2006 Short Films that are Nominated for an Oscar .

If you did not get to go to a screening of Oscar nominated short films, I highly recommend that you Click on over to Amazon.com.
You can buy the 2006 Nominees on a DVD collection.
The 2005 Short Films are also available for purchase.

These short films are so good, its a shame that they are not shown in more movie theatres - so that more people can see them.

Half Nelson

AFI had a screening tonight at at The Arclight Cinema .
It was the movie, Half Nelson .

Ryan Gosling is nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. He plays a school teacher who has a drug problem.
I was so happy to hear that at the Spirit Awards he won Best Actor - and that Shareeka Epps, who plays a student in the film - won the Best Actress Award.

I was checking out some of the IMDB.com message boards about the movie.
And people were posting questions asking about how his Cat dies.
Yeah, thats what I was wondering too.
There is a scene, where he wakes up to feed the cat. And the cat is lying there dead.
I was wondering what happened. And according to some of the posts, we were to believe that his cat does die from eating some of his drugs.
It is supposed to show how far out of control his life is getting due to the drugs.

All in all, Half Nelson is a very dramatic movie, with outstanding acting performances.

Out and About

I had completely forgot that today was Superbowl Sunday.
It slipped my mind when I was making my plans.
In a way thats good. It means everyone else in LA will be in front of their TV sets, and I can be out and about doing things with no one else to get in my way.

I volunteered at the Falcon Theatre for their Children's Matinee of "The Root Beer Bandits".
Yes, it was less of an audience than usual due to the Superbowl. But there were some Dads there with their kids.
I so enjoy the Children's Matinees. All the little kids are so cute. And the plays that the Falcon puts on for the kids, are very entertaining.

Later on, I went for a little walk in Griffith Park .
Funny, I don't live very far from there - and yet I never go.
So I drove over, and I saw they had pony rides. I stopped and took some pictures of the cute little kids on the ponies.

Then, I went over to The Arclight .
I saw "Pan's Labyrinth". I have been wanting to see it since they showed it at AFI when I volunteered there.
There are alot of gruesome scenes. When it got to bloody for me, I just closed my eyes until it was over.

Notes on A Scandal

Over at the Arclight Cinemas , for a late show of "Notes on A Scandal"

Yes, the acting was amazing. And the story kept me on the edge of my seat...
But the poor kitty who was owned by the psycho woman played by Judi Dench...
Did you see the "Cat Fancy" magazines on the table, covered in dirt and shovels, after she was done burying the poor little thing ....

I could completely relate to her getting more psycho because her poor cat had died.
Yeah, that would be me.... totally even wackier because the poor cat died. LOL !

The scene where she tries to stop Cate Blanchett from going to her child's school performance ... all because the cat died. Oh, I loved it !

And any movie that Bill Nighy is in - well, you have to see it ! He plays Cate Blanchett's older husband..... and he should have received a Best Supporting Actor Nomination, in my opinion. He's one of the best actors out there, and he was great in this.

Great movie.
Judi Dench
's character is so unstable in this, she is amazing.

Walk on The Wild Side

Volunteering at the Egyptian Theatre

Tonights movie was Walk on the Wild Side from 1962 .
Even though the movie is set in a bordello, I loved watching all the strong female characters in it.

Both Jane Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck are amazing in this movie.

Oscar Roundtable & The Queen

During the afternoon, at The Egyptian Theatre , Newsweek Magazine hosted an Oscar Roundtable .

Check out the link above. Its a very interesting discussion. They are talking about their acting careers and how they got started. As an actress myself, I found this to be a very interesting conversation to listen to.

Many of the Best Actor and Best Actress nominees were
there, including Brad Pitt , , Cate Blanchett , Forest Whitaker , Helen Mirren , Penelope Cruz , and Leonardo DiCaprio .

After that, if the evening there was a screening "The Queen" and Helen Mirren did a Q&A after the movie was over.

Black Moon & Mels Diner

Volunteered at the Egyptian Theatre tonight. The movie was
"Black Moon"
directed by Louis Malle

But for some reason I just decided to take off after my shift was over.
Instead, I stopped at Mel's Restaurant just around the corner on Highland

I ordered a roast chicken dinner with potatoes and steamed vegetables.
The mixed vegetables were delicious. There was a variety of vegetables, with some yellow thing that I did not know what it was - but it sure did taste good.
I said to the waitress "The vegetables are delicious. What is the yellow thing?"
She answered "yellow baby chinese carrots".

As I stopped off to pay my bill at the cashier, I said "Those vegetables were wonderful !"
The cashier said "Oh, did you liked the yellow baby chinese carrots?"
Oh, yes...

I mean, think about it... how many times have you gone out to a restaurant and actually complimented them on the steamed vegetables ...
They were that good....

Friends of Eddie Coyle

Tonights movie at the Egyptian Theatre was "Friends of Eddie Coyle" from 1973.

One of the reasons I wanted to see it was that Peter Boyle was one of the actors in it.
And I loved him on "Everybody Loves Raymond ."

When I arrive in downtown Hollywood, I usually park at Hollywood & Highland . The Egyptian will validate the parking, and its only $2 for 4 hours.
And I have my certain favorite levels and places where I like to park.

I park the car, and I go to the elevators.
And who is also waiting for the elevator - Doris Roberts , who was also on "Everybody Loves Raymond"
She was with friends, and there must have been an event at the Kodak Theatre that she was going to.

We all got in the elevator together, and I thought about saying something to her about how much I loved her on "Everybody Loves Raymond".
But for the few times I have been close to a celebrity, I really don't like to say anything.
I feel like I am intruding on their private time.
So I just smiled at her as I left the elevator.

Then it dawned on me, that Peter Boyle who played her husband in "Everybody Loves Raymond" was in the movie that I was going to go see that evening.

Such an interesting coincidence.

The Farm

Trying to meet a friend for a free screening of a movie. The movie was
"Miss Potter" starring Renée Zellweger .
And the screening was taking place at The Grove .

Well, I was running really late from the office. And when I arrived, the free screening was sold out.
I called my friends on my cellphone once I made it into the lobby. They were already in the theatre, and there were no seats left.

So, instead of seeing the movie, I went out to "The Farm" restaurant.
I has a wonderful Shepherds Pie, that included yellow beets and little baby onions.
It was so delicious, and filled with yummy vegetables.

Movie Day

It was a Movie day for me today over at the Arclight Cinemas .

I was running late, so my friends bought a ticket for me to see "DreamGirls" ...at Arclight Dome Theatre . They leave my ticket with the ticket taker.

Its assigned seating in the Arclight. You pick the seat you want to sit in when you buy your ticket.
And by the time I get there, the previews are over and the movies starting - and its pitch black in the theatre.

The usher says "Follow Me" - and he takes off towards my seat.
I can't find him. I can't see anything. Because it is completely dark in the theatre.

I find the usher again. Same thing. He says "Follow me" and He takes off again.
I am left standing in the dark.

The usher comes up to me at says "You aren't following me"
I say "Its because I can't see you."

After the movie, we run over and have Dinner at Kabuki on Vine.
I get a Tempera combo with salmon. Very good.

Then my friends and I head off the see the second movie of the day,
"The Holiday".
A very cute holiday movie.

We stop off and have desert in the Arclight Cafe.
I order a Decaf, and a carrot cake. The carrot cake is delicious.

Casino Royale

So what do I do after walking around the Art Museum all morning ?
I go home in the afternoon and take a Nap.
Then I completely oversleep.
My nap lasted 3 hours in the afternoon.

Oh, no ... I will never go to sleep tonight.

So off I go to the movies.... for a 10 pm show.

I went to the Mann Theatres in Hollywood to see "Casino Royale" .
I had been wanting to see this since it came out, but put it off because I had a head cold.
It was a good movie. I like James Bond films.

Beverly Hills & Los Feliz

I have the week off from work for the holidays. I decided to check out a little restaurant called "Coupra Cafe" . It was listed in the LA Times Food Section.

I had a wonderful Butternut Squash Soup. And a Mushroom Crepe.
They also have delicious coffee, and chocolates.

Then, off I went to the Laemmle's Music Hall, to see "Last King of Scotland".
I wanted to see Forest Whitaker's outstanding performance.

Unfortunately, it is playing in so few movie theatres, I had to watch it on the Music Hall's teeny weeny little screen.

And parking in Beverly Hills ! ugh !
I had forgotten that today is actually a work day. Free street parking is only on Sundays. So I had to park in a structure.
And they only validate for the movies in the evenings.
And I went to a matinee.
So it cost me $10 to park just to see the movie !

Then in the evening, it was off to "Big Foot Lodge" in Los Feliz to hang out and relax.
Since it is the holiday, everyone was telling me that it wasn't as crowded as it usually is.
A very relaxed atmosphere. With a wide variety of people.
It was a nice relaxing evening.

The Departed

Back over the Mann's Cinema . This time to see Martin Scorsese's
The Departed .
Now this was a great movie.
Outstanding Acting, Script - everything.

I am still on the Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine, and sitting in the very back row.

Then one of the Mann employees kept coming in and out to watch the movie.
He kept crawling over me to sit down. Then another employee joined him for a bit. She kept standing up and looking at her cell phone.

As I was leaving, the elderly man at the other end of the row asked me "Why were those people getting up and down from their seats all the time?"
I said "I don't know, but it was annoying."
He said "Yes it was."

In these kind of things, I always feel I have the right to complain. And some kind of duty, because now a little old man who is a total stranger just told me he was disturbed during the movie.
I found the Theatre Manager. And I explained the problem. And I pointed out the two employees.
"I don't care if you allow the employees to view the movies, but they shouldn't be crawling over patrons, and getting up and down from their seats."
The Manager assured me that the employees were Not supposed to be in watching the movie.
And he gave me a Free pass to come back and see a free movie ...

I hope the elderly man complained and got a free pass too..

Unfaithfully Yours

Hey, I didn't volunteer at the Egyptian today.
I actually used one of the free vouchers they give to me when I volunteer, and I just went to see the movie.
Its about all I can do since I am still recovering from The Cold From Hell.

The movie was "Unfaithfully Yours" a comedy from 1948.
Starring Rex Harrison .

Yes, I loaded up on Alka-Seltzer Plus and Halls Cough Drops before I went.

Oh, and I wish you a very Merry Virus and Bacteria Free Christmas !

Borat

I am to the point where I have to get out of the house. So a trip to the Mann's Cinema .

I decided to see "Borat" . I wanted to see it mainly because of all the controversy.
And also, because it had a really short running time and I don't know how long I will last in the movie theatre with my head cold.

So I stashed Halls Cough Drops and Kleenex in my purse.
And right before the movie started, I took an Alka-Seltzer Plus. The Orange Zest flavor is actually pretty good, and has become my cold medicine of choice.

Then I sat in the very last seat, in the very last row ... right next to the door.
I only had to leave once to go cough and blow my nose.

I really thought "Borat' was funny.
There were alot of older, ethnic people in the audience.
Little old ladies with scarves around their heads.
And when I saw them sitting down, I was worried how they would react to the movie.
The minute the credits came on, they started howling with laughter.
They loved it.
They even thought the credits were funny.

Ghostbusters

Happy Halloween !
Hope you had a fun one !

I spent mine at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood watching Ghostbusters on the big screen.

This has always been one of my favorite movies.

And to add to the fun of the evening, Ray Parker Jr was there.
We watched the original video of the theme song to "Ghostbusters" - and sang along.

"Who ya gonna call ? Ghostbusters ! "

Very busy at the office... its Month End, and I work in an accounting department.

So I was late arriving at the Egyptian Theatre for the screening of Roma .
Since I was so late, I hung out even later and helped at the party afterwards. They had food and drinks in the courtyard.
And there were very many guests.

AFI Orientation

I stopped off in the morning at Angels Cafe on Hollywood & Western for Breakfast.

Then, I went to the volunteer orientation meeting at the Mark Goodson Theatre on
the AFI Campus, for the AFI Film Festival.

They had all the Department Heads speak. Got over the rules for each department.
They gave us a printed schedule of what we already signed up for.

I pretty much had my entire schedule worked out.
I just added one more evening to it.

It was a very crowded orientation.
