Buck Rogers and Scarlett O'Hara

..

I just had the wonderful experience of seeing "Gone With The Wind" on the big screen at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Wilshire Blvd.

To start the night off, they showed News Clips of the Gone With the Wind premiere.
Very exciting to see a Clark Gable interview.

First, a wonderful panel discussion on Gone with the Wind and it included some of the child actors from the movie.

Then they showed the first in the Buck Rogers serial.
If you ever get a chance to see one of these, I really recommend it.
Buck Rogers' is a pilot whose plane crashes and he is frozen - until the year 2440 or thereabouts.
He then because an astronaut / pilot in the new time period.
The serials were made in the 1930s - so it is funny to see what they thought modern technology would look like.
For example, in the 1930s there was no knowledge yet of computers. So when the Scientists in 2440 have to look things up, they are still using Books.
This got major laughs from the audience.

And then the screening of the nearly 4 hour long "Gone With the Wind". Including intermission.
This is truely one of the most outstanding romantic movies ever made.
Gorgeous on the big screen.

Of course, I could go on and on about the Dysfunctional relationships in Gone with the Wind.
But I won't - its meant to be a dramatic romance and it sure is.
I'll just blame everything on Ashley - if he had married Scarlett, whom he loved - and not the other woman who was the perfect wife - well, none of this would have happened.
Ashley and Scarlett would have settled down to a crazy married life wrapped around her self-absorbed behavior, and everyone would have been happy.
Instead, everyone married people they didn't love - and its emotional torture.
Then of course there is Clark Gable as the dashing Rhett Butler - and its a major melodramatic romance.

I loved every minute of it !

Tropic Thunder

Caught Tropic Thunder today. (I am running a few weeks behind on my movies.)
Its still in The Arclight Dome , and still Number #1 at the box-office.

Very funny ! There were scenes were I just laughed and laughed.
Totally hysterical.

There are alot of "Hollywood Insider" type jokes. But if you remember that it is a
"Movie About Making a Movie" - you will totally get it.

It must have been a pretty expensive movie to make - all those helicopters !
But I would guess that Ben Stiller can pretty much get any budget he wants - his movies are so funny !

As we left the theatre, the first thing I said was:
"I wish Tom Cruise would do more Comedies !"

I think Ben Stiller is the only person who get Tom Crise to do something like this.
Watch the ending credits - they are hysterical !

Beowulf

Years and years ago, I listened to the epic poem, "Beowulf" as a book-on-tape in the car, as I was driving to work.
As I was watching the movie, Beowulf , I could tell right away that this is Not an exact recreation of the classic poem.
Personally, I wished they had stuck closer to the original story-line.

In addition, I really didn't like the cartoony effects that they added. It made the movie look to Cutesy - kind of like watching Shrek.
And its a movie with scary monsters - and a hero who rescues everyone from the horrible monsters.
I just had a hard time getting passed some of the cutesy characters.

Even though the film shows how, over the years, the people started to follow Christianity - there are still a few comments that don't fit the original religious ideas in the poem.
For example, a man asks the king, since they are in a time of crisis with Grendel the monster terrorizing them, "Do you want to order the people to pray to the God the Romans worship, the Jesus God - as well as our gods?"
And the King replies "No. At a time like this the god's won't help us. We need a hero."
And then Beowulf shows up right in the nick of time.

Read the Wikipedia Discription of Beowulf.
I quote Wikipedia "That the scribes of Cotton Vitellius A.XV were Christian is beyond doubt; and it is equally certain that Beowulf was composed in a Christianized England, since conversion took place in the sixth and seventh centuries...Scholars disagree as to whether Beowulf's main thematic thrust is pagan or Christian in nature...Beowulf’s own beliefs are not expressed explicitly. He offers eloquent prayers to a higher power, addressing himself to the “Father Almighty” or the “Wielder of All.”

In the film, after Beowulf is older, you see people carrying crosses and Crucifixes, and some people have a cross on their clothing.
So the film does depict that there was a change in religious belief during Beowulf's life.

I just wish they had done the entire movie according to the original poem. Its one of the oldest writings that we have in existence. Dating back to around the 8th century.
The original story has survived the test of time. I would have liked to see that as a movie.

The Mist

Just saw an advanced screening of "The Mist" .
I do like scary monster movies. And I do like Stephen King novels.

"The Mist" was scary. And gruesome in spots.
A government experiment goes wrong - and we get invaded by horrible creatures from another dimension. These creatures hide in The Mist.
The story has a very timely message about messing with our environment and how it could cause us horrible problems.

Marcia Gay Harden plays a psycho religious woman. And it was very unfortunate that a good monster movie like this, had to go in that direction with religion.
I think that might be how Stephen King wrote it - I don't know, I haven't read the Novella .
In the beginning its obvious that Marcia Gary Harden's character is alittle wacky, but she has a scene where she is praying for her fellow survivors - so I thought "okay, she's wacky but sincere, this won't be that bad".
Then she starts to go really wacky - and I was getting alittle offended.
And in the end, people in the group of survivors start to blindly follow her, because they think she is a Mystic and talks directly to God.
It ended up being a demonstration of what people will do in a Crisis, and the "Mob Mentality" that sets in. And how people will follow anyone who offers them hope, even if that person is obviously preaching a belief that is wrong.

There is a scene in the movie, when some of the survivors are heading out into the Mist to try to get help. And one of the men turns to Marcia Gay Harden, and says something like "You know I believe in God too, but my God is alot nicer than yours."

Back to the Scary monsters. Yes, lots and lots of scary monsters.
Great special effects with the scary monsters.
I jumped a few times in terror. I was worried was going to have trouble getting to sleep that night. So great scary movie.

But this is not a happy movie. It was really sad and depressing. The ending is very tragic.
So just be warned - even if you like scary gruesome movies, this one is a real downer.

Diary of A Mad HouseWife

Diary of A Mad Housewife
At the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
I saw Diary of A Mad Housewife from 1970.

If you want to see an excellent movie from the 1970s - this is the one to see.
And... Frank Langella was absolutely gorgeous in his younger days...
Carrie Snodgress and Richard Benjamin are great in this too.

The plot is that a bored housewife has an affair with a writer.
To me it was like looking into a time machine, at many of the social and marital issues that happened in the 70s.
A great glimpse into that time period..

Wild Hogs

Over at The Grove to catch an early afternoon matinee.
I really wanted to see "Wild Hogs".

A moving starring men over the age of 40 ? I am sooooo there !
Such a good cast, John Travolta, William H. Macy, Tim Allen , Martin Lawrence , Ray Liotta and Marisa Tomei and Jill Hennessy .

It was such a funny movie. From the beginning to the end.
And then make sure you stay for the closing credits because those are hysterical too.

Also in the movie is John C. McGinley , from the TV show "Scrubs" . He is so funny as the local cop. And Peter Fonda makes a surprise visit. He seems to be in all the motorcycle movies lately, He was in Ghostrider too.

Oh, okay... my favorite scene: the four guys - Travolta, Macy, Allen, and Lawrence - are skinny-dipping in a pond. Macy's character takes off his shorts, and you see his rear end - or maybe it was a "butt" double.
He jumps into the pond with the rest of the guys.
They are in the water up to their waist. A really funny cop, played by McGinley, comes along and wants to get in the water with them, although he is looking for much more in the way of action.
The four guys have to get away from him, without offending him since he is the local cop.
Its such a funny scene.

And why doesn't Ray Liotta do more comedy ? In "Wild Hogs" he is the bad guy. I loved him in this. Whatever you do, don't miss the funny closing credits. Because Liotta will really make you laugh during the credits.

My only complaint - the younger actresses.
William H Macy was born in 1950. His love interest, Marisa Tomei born in 1964.
Tim Allen was born 1953. Jill Hennessy plays his wife, and she was born in 1968.
I think would have been better to see these roles played by women who were not 14 to 15 years younger that the male actors. Though granted, with Hollywood age-ism, both Tomei and Hennessy are older than what would normally be cast in a movie like this.
It just that if the movie studio felt that actors in the 50-ish age group can carry a big hit movie - then I wish they would have done the same with the actresses. Even though both Tomei and Hennessy are great in their roles.

After the movie is over, we head over to Dupars . For their delicious Chicken Pot Pie.
And I call a female friend on the phone.
"Guess what movie I just saw?" I ask.
"What?"
"Wild Hogs" I reply.
"No you didn't" she said.
"Yes, and it is so funny! You have to see it!" I said.
"No, I don't" she said
"Yes, yes .... John Travolta, William H Macy, Tim Allen - they are all naked in a pond!" I explain.
"Oh..no...they aren't", she replied shocked.
"Yes, yes they are. You have to see it !" I say.
"Nooooooo" says my friend.
"Well, at least request it from Netflix when its available. Because it is really is hysterical."

The Departed

Back over the Mann's Cinema . This time to see Martin Scorsese's
The Departed .
Now this was a great movie.
Outstanding Acting, Script - everything.

I am still on the Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine, and sitting in the very back row.

Then one of the Mann employees kept coming in and out to watch the movie.
He kept crawling over me to sit down. Then another employee joined him for a bit. She kept standing up and looking at her cell phone.

As I was leaving, the elderly man at the other end of the row asked me "Why were those people getting up and down from their seats all the time?"
I said "I don't know, but it was annoying."
He said "Yes it was."

In these kind of things, I always feel I have the right to complain. And some kind of duty, because now a little old man who is a total stranger just told me he was disturbed during the movie.
I found the Theatre Manager. And I explained the problem. And I pointed out the two employees.
"I don't care if you allow the employees to view the movies, but they shouldn't be crawling over patrons, and getting up and down from their seats."
The Manager assured me that the employees were Not supposed to be in watching the movie.
And he gave me a Free pass to come back and see a free movie ...

I hope the elderly man complained and got a free pass too..

Unfaithfully Yours

Hey, I didn't volunteer at the Egyptian today.
I actually used one of the free vouchers they give to me when I volunteer, and I just went to see the movie.
Its about all I can do since I am still recovering from The Cold From Hell.

The movie was "Unfaithfully Yours" a comedy from 1948.
Starring Rex Harrison .

Yes, I loaded up on Alka-Seltzer Plus and Halls Cough Drops before I went.

Oh, and I wish you a very Merry Virus and Bacteria Free Christmas !

Borat

I am to the point where I have to get out of the house. So a trip to the Mann's Cinema .

I decided to see "Borat" . I wanted to see it mainly because of all the controversy.
And also, because it had a really short running time and I don't know how long I will last in the movie theatre with my head cold.

So I stashed Halls Cough Drops and Kleenex in my purse.
And right before the movie started, I took an Alka-Seltzer Plus. The Orange Zest flavor is actually pretty good, and has become my cold medicine of choice.

Then I sat in the very last seat, in the very last row ... right next to the door.
I only had to leave once to go cough and blow my nose.

I really thought "Borat' was funny.
There were alot of older, ethnic people in the audience.
Little old ladies with scarves around their heads.
And when I saw them sitting down, I was worried how they would react to the movie.
The minute the credits came on, they started howling with laughter.
They loved it.
They even thought the credits were funny.

Edward Scissorhands

Volunteered at The Egyptian Theatre for Edward Scissorhands .

The Ahmanson Theater is having a stage productions of Edward Scissorhands.
So The Egyptian hosted a party and screening.
The thing that was really fun was that many of the Cast members from the Stage performance, came to see the screening of the movie.

Edward Scissorhands is one of my favorite movies. I love Johnny Depp . But even more, I think Dianne Wiest is just the most perfect Avon lady ever.
I was an Avon Lady for a few months, about ten years ago. So I can relate to what her character must go through.

Crispin Glover

Tonight, I was at the Egyptian Theatre for a screening of Chrispin Glover's
"What Is It?" .

I managed to catch some of the screening, but was very busy at the front door.
There were a few drunk patrons who made noise in the theatre while the live performance portion of the show was going on.
Luckily, they left right away of their own accord.

It was an evening with a very large crowd. And the evening was very fun.
I had plenty to keep me busy.
I just wish I had had more time to see the performance, and more of the movie.

And another volunteer wore a leopard print shirt.
We were both very much dressed along the theme of "Nature" for the evening !

AFI Film Festival Day 12

In the morning, I both volunteered at the AFI Film Festival and saw the movies.
The first screening I had to be there for was "Hollywood Dreams" .
The director Henry Jaglom and lead actress Tanna Frederick along with Karen Black , did a really fun Q&A afterwards.
This is such a good movie, about trying to be a success in Hollywood.
It was the perfect, and completely suitable, movie to end my AFI volunteer gig with.

After that was done, and I helped take the tickets for the screening of "Bug" - I went and ate some lunch in the Arclight Cinemas Cafe.
The Arclight really got their moneys worth from me these last few weeks.
I may have seen nearly 20 FREE movies is the last two weeks - but I paid for my concessions and ate at the Arclight Restaurant more than I can count.

I had to be on my final shift at The Arclight Dome Theatre , for the screening of Curse of the Golden Flower .
It was hectic and crazy. The Dome is smaller than the Mann Chinese Theatre .
So to have the closing night Gala at the Dome - it was just crazy.

It was assigned seating in certain areas. And general seating in other areas.
And that makes for a crazy night.
Some people who had general admission, were trying to sit in assigned seats.
Also, some of the VIPs arrived late - and we had to keep people from sitting in those seats.
As ushers, we were trying to control it. And it was alot to do.

After the movie started, I watched from the side for about 10 minutes.
I looked around for a seat. There were singles scattered here and there.
But I don't like crawling over people once the movie has started.
Besides, I was exhausted, and it was time to go home.

I later found out that after the movie, there was a wonderful party on the top level of the Arclight Cinemas parking structure.
I missed it, I was home sound asleep by then.

AFI Film Festival Day 9

Okay, this was one of those hectic, crazy nights.
Over at the AFI Film Festival to volunteer..
I didn't see any celebs. They have started to escort many of them in via the back doors, so they don't get stuck in the mad rush of theatre patrons who are coming and going to all the movies.
Ashley Judd was there, for "Come Early Morning" , but she was escorted in the back so I did not see her.

The worst thing about volunteering for any movie - anywhere, for any organization - is when they throw a party before the screening of the movie.
That means there are guests arriving to see the movie who are completely drunk.
And you have to try to get their tickets while they stand there and sway back and forth.
One woman was so drunk, she couldn't even get her hand into her purse to get her ticket. She kept aiming for the purse and missing. She was holding up the long line, and I was just about to get the Manager when she finally got her hand in her purse and got her ticket. Then she stumbled into the theatre.

And of course, being drunk can make some people obnoxious. I am only 4 feet 10 inches - so I can't fight people.
Some very well dress people came barrelling passed - very liquored up.
I politely asked for their tickets.
The woman snapped "We're VIPs" and they pushed passed, the smell of liquor fumes trailing after them.

The volunteer I was working with was so upset.
I looked for the Manager, and he had other problems he was dealing with.
I said "Let it go. Theres nothing we can do about it. We are only volunteers".
When the manager came by, I mentioned it to him just so he knew.

The screening was completely sold out, so I just hung out in the lobby.

Then, after all that - they asked me to stay and work a second shift.
They had added a midnight screening of "Pan's Labyrinth " and needed volunteers.
So I was there to take tickets again.

It was one of those movies where everyone wanted to see it. And there wasn't a single seat left in the place.
The line went down the hall, to practically where the escalators are on the Arclight Cinemas second floor.
They had a "Rush Ticket line near the box-office, but I don't think any of those people got in.

I have to say, most people in the line for "Pan's Labyrinth" were very nice, and well-behaved. They were just fans who wanted to see the movie.

One young hippy-looking couple approached me. The girl held her ticket upside down, so the print was facing the floor.
She held on to it, and wouldn't let me take it. She wanted me to rip it while she held it.
"No, I need to see your ticket, please."
Of course, I turned it over and saw that they had purchased a ticket for another movie, and were trying to sneak in.
"This is the wrong ticket" I said. And they got out of line.

Two more guys tried it. They handed me the ticket, I looked at it "Sorry this is the wrong movie."
They acted confused looking at the sign. I almost believe they were at the wrong theatre, their acting was so good.

Finally, the entire theatre was packed. And they wanted to release the rush seats.
The manager telling people "If you leave now to go to the bathroom or to get concessions, we are giving your seat away."
It was that crazy - and there was that many people who wanted in to see Pan's Labyrinth.

I got home close to 2 am.

AFI Film Festival Day 4

I have never seen 4 movies in one day. But today I did.

Whenever we work at a shift for the AFI Film Festival , they give us a Voucher. And that can be exchanged for a ticket
to any movie.
Or, your festival volunteer badge will let you into any movie that is not sold out, and has seating.

So the first thing I did, I went to the Volunteer check-in area to get my vouchers from the last two nights that I have volunteered.
I took my vouchers to the Boxoffice, and I exchanged them for tickets to two morning movies.

The first movie I was was "Somebodies" . A funny look at young adults who are deciding, since they are no longer in school, if they are going to party all the time, or if they are going to following the straight and narrow and attend church. It a humorous story about young people trying to figure out how to live their lives.

In between movies, I met up with two friends in the lobby. We were calling eachother on our cell phones.
But none of us had gotten tickets to the same movie. All three of us wanted to see something else.
So we made plans to meet in the lobby later on, and we all went in different directions to see our different films.

I kept seeing Kirsten Dunst going in and out of movies. She seemed to be watching as many movies and I was. I even ran into her in the ladies room. She was just in Shorts, and very casual. At first I didn't recognize her.

I then went and saw a movie called "Full Grown Men" - very colorfully done. And I enjoyed watching the lead actor.

Since all I ate all day was concession stand food, I stopped off in the Arclight Cinemas
Cafe for a Chinese Chicken Salad.
I called both of my friends on their cell phone. I got no answered because I guess they were still watching their movies.

Then, I headed over to my Volunteer Shift.
The movie was "Stephanie Daily" a serious drama starring Tilda Swinton.
I did the "Clicker" - clicking the little metal thing as each person walked in, so as to keep a count as to how many people went inside the theatre.
Then I went in to watch the movie.

Next, the movie was "Kurt Cobain About A Son" . One of my friends came to the movie - so we actually got to see eachother.
This screening was fun, because it wasn't the usual film festival people. Alot of the people attending were Rock & Rollers who obviously don't go to many film festivals.
They didn't understand that there is a Ballot that each person checks off in the end, so the AFI Film Fest can give an "Audience Choice Award".
So I had to give many of the people instructions on how to do this.

And some of the patrons are just figuring out how the entire ticketing/pass thing works.
One patron came over to me "Are you letting people in your theatre with just a pass?" she asked me.
"Yes, a pass will get you in to see the movie." I said.
She replied "Well, thats what I explained to the manager in the next theatre and he told me we have to have tickets".
I then explained to her, that some of the events require a separate ticket because it is assigned seating. These are usually the ones they expect to sell-out, because there is a big celebrity speaking.
And other events take either tickets or passes because it is general "sit where ever you want" seating.
So there is a difference.

After the movie, I went up to the top of the Arclight parking structure - where the Cinema Lounge is at.
I had told my two friends (who had disappeared into their movies) to meet me up there at the end of the night.
They are having musicians playing music.

I saw one of the Managers I had worked with.
"Can I get into the Cinema Lounge to listen to the music?"
He answered, No, that the volunteers are only allowed into the Cinema Lounge during the afternoon. I can't go
in there in the evening. "But you can try it" was his last word of advice.

I walked to the Cinema Lounge door. And peaked inside, there was plenty of space.
Once of my fellow volunteers stopped me.
"No volunteers can't come in.", he said.
"Oh, Okay".
Well, I tried.

I ran into the Volunteer Coordinator who was sitting in the outside area.
"Gee, why can't we go into the Cinema Lounge? I just want to listen to the music."
He had a look on his face that said I was about the millionth volunteer to ask him this question, and he just shook his head.
We chatted for a bit, and then I just headed home.

AFI Film Festival Day 3 - The Banquet & Inland Empire

Two volunteer shifts tonight over at the AFI Film Festival .
The first one was for "The Banquet" . I got to go inside and watch the movie.
Gorey and bloody and beautiful.
Like watching a ballet - where everything gets all bloody.

Then my second shift was for David Lynch's Inland Empire .

I was doing ushering again. "The Banquet" was general seating. Inland Empire was assigned seating.
So for my second shift, I had to direct people and tell them where their seats were.

A large group of people showed up. I asked "Can I help you?"
And they just stood there.
I said "Can I see your tickets"
And one lady said "They didn't give us tickets".
And there at the back of their group, was David Lynch himself.
I said "Oh, please wait one moment while I get the manager."
I ran to the manager "David Lynch's Guests are here."
At that point, the manager took over.

Ghostbusters

Happy Halloween !
Hope you had a fun one !

I spent mine at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood watching Ghostbusters on the big screen.

This has always been one of my favorite movies.

And to add to the fun of the evening, Ray Parker Jr was there.
We watched the original video of the theme song to "Ghostbusters" - and sang along.

"Who ya gonna call ? Ghostbusters ! "
