When you are going through Hell
Thought for the day from a Bottle of Honest Tea .
"When you are going through Hell - keep going".
A quote from Winston Churchill
Here's an interesting blog post from Dave Shearon's Blog on the quote - and the song by Rodney Adkins and his song by the same title If You're Going Through Hell.
This is great advice for anyone who is going through Hell.
Just keep going.
Because if you stop and stand still, you just might get burnt to a crisp.
So keep moving until you come out on the other side.

Happiness is not the Destination
I saw a customized license plate frame on a car in the parking lot of Ralphs Grocery store
on the corner of Western & Hollywood.
The car was parked right next to mine.
It said "Happiness is not a Destination - its the means of travel."
I like that saying better than the belief that you have to be happy all the time.
A few years back, I had a friend who was always striving to be happy. She thought happiness was the ultimate experience.
She was very miserable in her pursuit of happiness, because whenever there was a problem in her life she became unhappy.
The she would become frustrated at not being happy - which made her even more unhappy.
I never really thought happiness was the ultimate goal.
Instead, there is a deep joy that comes from feeling fulfilled and knowing you are doing what you are meant to do in life.
And that begins with a belief in God, and a belief in things eternal.
Joy is different that happiness. And its possible that while having joy in your life, you'll have some down times.
But just because you hit a bad bump in the road - you can still have that deep inner peace and joy that comes from a place beyond what you can create.

Church Tonight Labels: church, losangeles, spiritual
And... after unpacking my groceries, I still managed to visit a church tonight.
I went to the evening service of Mosaic , which meets in downtown Los Angeles at The Mayan Nightclub .
Yes, it is one of those churches that rent out a nightclub on Sunday night.
Walking in, it was so weird walking passed the bar with the stale alcohol smell from the nightclub last night.
They had alot of good rock music for worship, but the crowd was very young. I think in a few weeks I might check out the morning service they have in Beverly Hills instead.
Quiet Sunday
Very quiet lay-ed back Sunday... and I don't have to many of those.
I am always looking for a good church in Los Angeles that has evening services.
That way I can stay out late on Saturday, sleep in on Sunday - and still make it to church.
There is a Catholic Church on Vine ...or is it Rossmore once it is South of Melrose - I always drive passed - So tonight I went to Catholic Mass at Christ The King .
I consider myself Presbyterian - but every now and then its nice to go visit some place different.
The church was beautiful inside. And outside they were having a Family Fair of some kind.
After Mass, I drove to the Larchmont Area - and stopped off for dinner at Koo Koo Roo.
I was about 3 months behind on my Prevention Magazine subscription.
So I sat and read, and got caught up.

My Relgion
While I was at LACMA today, I was inspired by a quote on the wall by one of the Modern West exhibits.
One of the artists was asked by a magazine "What is your religion"
And he replied, "I would have to say my religion is California".
The Artist made some beautiful paintings of California, so I thought the quote was really wonderful.
I have emailed the Museum asking for more information, and I will update this as soon as I get it.
It inspired me to put a few things up on my Zazzle page ...

Happy Easter
On Easter Sunday, I know how important it is to get to Church early.
Mainly to find a parking place.
So I told myself I would get there at 10 minutes before the service started.
Well, I was 5 minutes late to Hollywood Presbyterian .
Because I was late, I had to sit way up in the balcony - because the rest of the church was full.
Part of the reason I was late, was trying to figure out what to wear.
The weather has been so weird - and for Easter Sunday it was pretty cold.
To cold for a Easter-y floral sundress.
So what to wear ?
In my closet was a dress I bought on the Internet nearly two years ago. In the catalog, it looked sexy enough for a night out.
But when it arrived it wasn't sexy, and it was actually kind of weird looking.
I thought the color was going to be cranberry from the catalog - but its a weird dark mauve/fuchsia shade - a color that I don't think I have ever seen before.
Plus, on top there are a few black sequins.
I only kept it because it fit me. But I can never figure out where to wear it.
So I finally decided to wear it to church. The weird mauve fuchsia color is fine for Easter.
As for the black sequins - well, this is Hollywood. I can get away with sequins in church.
So I sat up in the balcony, and it was a lovely service.
The Cathedral Choir sang a selection from Puccini's "Gloria" .
The Mass Choir sang "O, The Blood" .
And the Cathedral Bells performed - which I just loved.
If you ever get to hear a performance by a Bells Choir, I recommend it. It is all bells of every size and tone, and it just beautiful.

Easter Saturday
Why don't we celebrate anything on the Saturday before Easter ?
Something must have happened on this day.
I mean we have Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Sunday ... what happened on Saturday ???
Maybe the Apostles were having a Pity Party Saturday. "Oh, no Jesus is dead, what are we going to do?"
Or maybe it was a Faithful Saturday: "Don't worry, have faith, something good will happen soon."
I am assuming they sat around kind of depressed that Jesus was crucified, and had no idea that Easter Sunday was just around the corner.
Either way, we should come up with a holiday and church service for this.
Good Friday
Today is Good Friday and I attended evening service at Hollywood Presbyterian Church .
It was a very solemn and meaningful service.
I especially enjoyed the song "Behold The Lamb of God", which the Cathedral Choir sang.
It is from the "Messiah" by GF Handel.

Maundy Thursday
First here's a link explaining Maundy Thursday .
In a nutshell, it is the day to remember The Last Supper, Garden of Gethsemane, the Washing of the Disciples Feet and the betrayal of Christ by Judas .
So, we are remembering the things Jesus did before he was taken to be crucified.
The term "Maundy" is a rough translation of a Latin and Old French word, that basically means "A New".
As in "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you"
In the past when I have visited Catholic church, the Mass for Maundy Thursday is very long. Presbyterian keep it at a regular service length.
I went over to Hollywood Presbyterian .
Two beautiful songs were sung tonight:
"Seekers of Your Heart" by Mel & Dick Tunney & Beverly Darnall
Because your heart was broken
Because You saw the need
Because You gave so freely
Because of Calvary
We can now be Called your own
Complete creations Filled with You alone
and
Where You There ?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

How Green Was My Valley
Volunteering today at the Egyptian Theatre .The movie was "How Green Was My Valley" from 1941. Directed by John Ford .
And with a very young Roddy McDowall.
This movie won 5 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Donald Crisp, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography.
Its the story of a Welsh coal-mining family who deal with faith, money and job security as they face the industrialization of the industry that they work in.
Check out the movie quotes page on IMDB.com .
There are some amazing lines in this movie. For instance:
"But remember, with strength goes responsibility - to others and to yourselves. For you cannot conquer injustice with more injustice - only with justice and the help of God."
There is a scene that is not in the quotes on IMDB, that really stood out to me. It is when Hew first becomes unable to walk, and Mr. Gruffydd goes to his bedside and tells him to have faith that God will heal him, and that he has to believe. Its a moving and touching scene.
I highly recommend you rent this movie. Its a great classic movie, with great moral lessons.
I think its one of the best movies ever made.
Its from the novel by Richard Llewellyn. When I got home, I got online to the Los Angeles Public Library , and I requested a few books by Richard Llewellyn.
I can't wait to read them.

Amazing Grace
Over at the Arclight this evening.
I wasn't really sure what I wanted to see. I just arrived in the lobby, and stood there looking at the marque.
I decided on seeing "Amazing Grace" .
I am so glad I picked that movie !!!
Very inspirational and moving - and it made me want to go out and save the world.
Just one warning - it is an English Period Drama taking place in the 18th century - you know, the types where the male characters are wearing white wigs and the female characters are in long poofy dresses. So if those kinds of movies are boring to you, then grab a big cup of coffee before you go, but I recommend that you still check it out.
William Wilberforce leads the fight to end slavery in 18th century England. The movie shows how he basically had to teach English society as to why it was wrong to capture and ship slaves to England. The movie also shows the physical pain he was in while he lead this fight. He suffered from the stomach ailment colitis . And the only thing to treat it back then was Laudanum , which is made from opium.
He was also the founder of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, though the film only briefly touches on this.
William Wilberforce is a man who did alot of great things in his day.
Its a wonderful movie, the acting was outstanding. And the costumes and 18th century period setting was perfect.
I highly suggest that you go see this movie, to learn about an important piece of history, and to learn about William Wilberforce.
After the movie, I decide to look up William Wilberforce on the internet.
I ordered the book, 365 Days With Wilberforce from Amazon.com. This is a daily devotional book, of Wilberforce's writings.
It arrived just a few days after I ordered it, and I find his writings very inspiring.
Then I went to the the Los Angeles Public Library website, and placed "holds" on the following books:
Real Christianity
William Wilberforce, God's Politician
Amazing Grace in the Life of William Wilberforce
Amazon.com has many more books about and by, William Wilberforce.
