He Had A Dream - Martin Luther King and The Civil Rights Movement by Flip Schulke Available At Amazon.com Barnes&Noble Half.com
Schulke first met King in 1958, when the young, white photojournalist was covering the civil rights movement for Ebony and Jet magazines. King grew to trust Schulke, and eventually a warm relationship developed between the two. That friendship allowed Schulke and his camera access to many of King's private moments, including meetings of black civil-rights leaders and intimate time spent with the family. This book is a collection of photographs from the 10 years Schulke spent in close confidence with King. There are 160 photographs, ranging in content from the Selma protesters to the hate-filled countenances of their adversaries to serene Sunday afternoons at the King home. Of the many stunning shots, those of Coretta Scott King at her husband's funeral and of Medgar Evers' daughter at his funeral are most unforgettable. Schulke's personal reflections appear as unobtrusive text and help create a book that is both a highly personal testament to a friend and a moving portrait of the civil-rights era. Kathleen Hughes

A Knock at Midnight - Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Martin Luther King by Martin Luther King Jr., Peter Holloran (Editor), Clayborne Carson (Editor) Available At Amazon.com Barnes&Noble Half.com
These 11 historic sermons--some complete recordings of entire addresses, others reconstructed from various church services--make plain why Martin Luther King Jr. considered his "first calling and greatest commitment" to be a preacher of the gospel. As an orator he is second to none, drawing his audience in with an urgency that resonates through every soaring cadence of his familiar, powerful voice. Using insights from psychology, philosophy, and the Bible, he appeals to the heads as well as the hearts of his congregations, explaining that personal and social change can only be effected by adopting a morality of love in service of God and humankind. While King's concern for social justice is a common theme throughout, each sermon is a jewel of literary artistry, as it presents a simple problem, examines its complications, and offers a startling and often challenging resolution. Topics range from "Rediscovering Lost Values," a caution that scientific progress without moral progress can result only in a step backward for humanity, to "An American Dream," a wake-up call to the "self-evident truth" of equality proclaimed in the Constitution.

A Call to Conscience - Landmark Speeches of Martin Luther King by Clayborne Carson (Editor), Kris Shephard (Editor), Martin Luther, Jr. King, Kris Shepard (Editor) Available At Amazon.com Barnes&Noble Half.com
In his introduction, the one-time ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young refers to MLK as "the voice of the century," and this collection deftly pays homage to that powerful voice. Carson (a Stanford University historian) and Shepard have compiled 12 of King's greatest speeches and prefaced them with touching and inspiring introductions written and read by prominent activists, leaders and theologians, including the Dalai Lama, Sen. Edward Kennedy and others. There's a lot more here than the "I Have a Dream" masterpiece (which is beautifully introduced by Dr. Dorothy I. Height, longtime president of the National Council of Negro Women). The material ranges from King's early talks in Alabama churches to the magnificent "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech, which he gave the night before his assassination. Many of the recordings have a raw quality, giving them authenticity. When King proclaims in his address to the first Montgomery Improvement Association mass meeting that democracy is "the greatest form of government on earth," the attendees' background cheers are so deafening that listeners will have to turn down the volume. The only element lacking in this noteworthy production is an adequate set of liner notes there are no dates for the material showcased, nor do the editors tell which speeches are on which CD. Simultaneous release with the Warner hardcover.

The Papers of Martin Luther King - Birth of a New Age 1955 to 1956 by Martin Luther, Jr. King (Editor), Clayborne Carson (Editor) Available At Amazon.com Barnes&Noble Half.com
In magisterial regularity, volumes of King's complete collected papers, planned to span 14 volumes, emerge one at a time. Only a single year is represented in the current installment, but what a consequential year it was for King and the civil rights movement. The brief but significant chronological range encompasses King's involvement in the Montgomery bus boycott following Rosa Park's arrest for not surrendering her bus seat to a white person. Documents compiled in this volume mark the growth of King's success as a protest leader, his "signal contribution to the Montgomery movement [being] to infuse it with a Christian ethos of nonviolence and explicitly Gandhian precepts of nonviolent action." The format duplicates that of the previous two volumes (which appeared in 1992 and 1994): a lengthy and enlightening biographical introduction preceding gathered correspondence, speeches, and other documents. Not for most browsers, but invaluable for public library research needs. Brad Hooper

Martin Luther King on Leadership - Inspiration and Wisdom for Challenging Times by Donald T. Phillips Available At Amazon.com Barnes&Noble Half.com
Leadership motivational speaker Donald T. Phillips, who has previously drawn organizational lessons for modern businesses from the careers of Abraham Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, turns to civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as a role model. A discussion of the Montgomery bus boycott, for example, draws out such principles as "Set goals and create a plan of action" and "Involve the people." More effective as a self-help book for business than as a biography, it does provide a useful introduction to King's life. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
