Easter Parade, one of the greatest musical ever produced, has it all! The wonderful songs of the inimitable Irving Berlin and of course, the classic performances of its stars, the great Fred Astaire and the enchanting Judy Garland. The music continues to thrill and entertain audiences decades later. The songs are as fresh as when the film made its debut.

Maybe it was because she was born in New Orleans, the first city of jazz, that Mahalia Jackson brought so much ornamentation to the traditional gospel songbook, stretching her phrases with the grace of a horn and fracturing single syllables into many-noted chromatic melodies. Or maybe the profound vocal gift she was born with would have ensured her a place among the greatest singers in any style she chose. At any rate, her accomplishments in American spiritual music remain unequaled.

Recalling rainy Saturdays spent watching black-and-white musicals on television with Mom, Happy Easter Songs hops off with Sammy Kaye and the Kaydets doing a Swing and Sway version of "Peter Cottontail." This is a lively, nostalgic, and largely secular celebration of Spring sprung by way of Easter featuring, among others, cowboy singer Gene Autry and the throaty tones of Burl Ives on the well-known "The Little White Duck." Rosemary Clooney contributes dreamy vocals to three numbers, including the childhood favorite "Lovely Weather for Ducks" and the Irving Berlin classic "Easter Parade." (Remember the adorable film of the same name starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland?) Half of the songs make merry with rabbits, including Art Carney's snappy word-jazz--small children will enjoy acting out the tales as he tells "Flop. Mop. Cotton and Pete" and, especially, "A Thump. A Twinkle. And a Twitch... Or How to Make a Rabbit." --Paige La Grone

This is the first of a series of recordings stemming from John Eliot Gardiner's "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage," a project to present all of the sacred cantatas in churches throughout Europe. The two cantatas on this disc are lesser-known Easter cantatas. Written in 1725, BWV 6 "Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden" ("Abide with us") is darkly dramatic, full of yearning. BWV 66, from 1724, is a reworking of a secular piece originally written to celebrate a princely birthday. It's a brighter work, as evidenced by its opening chorus, "Erfreut euch, ihr Herzen"("Rejoice, ye hearts"). Gardiner's period-practice interpretations are muscular enough to satisfy traditionalists as well, and performances of both cantatas are good without lighting any fires, as are the soloists--with the exception of Michael Chance's undernourished countertenor. Short timing, though--only 48 minutes, more than enough for another cantata. --Dan Davis
